2025 TITLE SEQUENCE
GOOSEBUMPS
THE VANISHING
This gooey main title sequence for the second season of the Disney + horror revival was a trip into the realm of practical effects. Coming off the heels of season one’s main title sequence, we knew we wanted to up our game the second time around. Our team spent weeks developing the technique utilized to capture our alien-like ooze all on camera.
The research and development phase took up the majority of the timeline; preparation was essential for the 2 day table top shoot.
I was able to see the entire process through, from early experimentation, to helping capture the effects on set, and finally putting it all together in after effects.

PROCESS
We began with a long research phase testing potential solutions for practical black goo. We needed control over the way it moved and simultaneously, it had to look right.
Ferro Fluid testing by Davis Chu and Luke Shelley
Frozen Letterforms testing by Alances Vargas
After we landed on the effect, we turned toward developing a 20 second sequence around it. This included many rounds of storyboarding, as well as some temporary 3D scenes created by Alances Vargas to help tell the story.
Once we had the story approved we honed in on the practical effects. These test shots utilized the letterforms from the final Goosebumps logo.
Our goo is a mixture of black paint and water frozen into mold of the logo. This footage of the letters melting is played in reverse and sped up.
On shoot day we were finally able to bring the entire sequence to life. Each take took about 7-10 minutes of melting the letters with a heat gun.
